A confounding of conditioned suppression in passive avoidance: ECS effects

چکیده

In the one-trial passive avoidance paradigm punishment of a highly probable response results in decreased rates and increased latencies of response. Presumably, Sa have learned to avoid the noxious stimulation by not responding. However, decreased response rates may be produced by an alternative procedure-conditioned suppression-where a freezing response conditioned to the situational cues competes with the previously emitted response. Since both conditioned suppression and passive avoidance procedures have identical behavioral consequences, reduced rates of responding after noxious treatment cannot be explained solely in terms of either paradigm. Moreover, electroconvulsive shock (ECS) may have different temporal effects on behavior resulting from conditioned avoidance and conditioned suppression (Chorover & Schiller, 1966). Their results emphasize the point that if inferences are to be drawn concerning the amnestic properties of ECS, the behavioral consequences of the conditioned suppression paradigm must be distinguished from those of one-trial passive avoidance. No such distinction is apparent in the numerous studies which purport to define the time course of memory consolidation (e.g., Heriot & Coleman, 1962; Weissman, 1964). In the experiments by Heriot & Coleman (1962) and Weissman (1964), rats given a single shock contingent upon a bar press showed subsequent reduced bar press rates. Estes (1944) ,however, has shown that rats shocked between rather than for bar presses also showed reduced response rates. Furthermore, rats subsequently exposed to the apparatus but not permitted to bar press showed recovery of bar press rates. These results suggest that shock delivered in the bar pressing situation can produce conditioned suppression as well as passive avoidance. The two studies reported here investigated the possibility that contingent shock delivered in a one-trial passive avoidance paradigm gives rise to substantial elements of conditioned suppression. If such a possibility could be confirmed, it would support the possibility that the long term amnestic effects of ECS could be due to an alleviation of conditioned suppression rather than to an effect on memory consolidation.

The Effects of Lidocaine Reversible Inactivation of the Dorsal Raphe Nucleus on Passive Avoidance Learning in Rats

Introduction: The role of serotonergic fibers in avoidance learning is controversial. Involvement of the dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN), the main source of hippocampal projecting serotonergic fibers in acquisition, consolidation and retrieval of passive avoidance (PA) learning, was investigated by functional suppression of this area. Materials and Methods: DRN functional inactivation was done by li...

Anterograde effects of a single electroconvulsive shock on inhibitory avoidance and on cued fear conditioning.

A single electroconvulsive shock (ECS) or a sham ECS was administered to male 3-4-month-old Wistar rats 1, 2, and 4 h before training in an inhibitory avoidance test and in cued classical fear conditioning (measured by means of freezing time in a new environment). ECS impaired inhibitory avoidance at all times and, at 1 or 2 h before training, reduced freezing time before and after re-presentat...

بررسی اثر سیتالوپرام (مهارگر بازجذب سروتونین ) بر یادگیری احترازی غیرفعال در رت

The role of serotonergic systems in learning processes is even more controversial: For example serotonergic lesion have been reported to facilitate, impair, or have no effect on performance in various learning tasks. There are several possible explanations for these discrepancies; different importance of  confounding activation of different learning processes, different importance of con...

Chronic and Sub-acute Effects of 3,4-methylenedioxy methamphetamine (MDMA) on Spatial Memory and Passive Avoidance Learning in Wistar Rats

Introduction: In the recent years, the use of several drugs such as cocaine and morphine has reduced, but the use of "club drugs" has increased in many countries. 3, 4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) which has known as ‘ecstasy’ among people has many harmful effects on serotonergic system in the brain. This system is responsible for learning and memory. In this study, we tested sub-acute a...

Differential assessment of retrograde amnesia produced by Hypothermia following one-trial avoidance conditioning

Two different measures of the retention of avoidance conditioning, frequently used in the investigation of retrograde anmesia (RA), were examined. Rats were given a single training trial on either passive or active avoidance in a conventional black-white discrimination apparatus and step•through latencies were recorded. Task sequence, footshock and hypothermia were experimentally varied across ...
